There is currently no surgery or implant that can cure or completely fix the vision loss caused by oculocutaneous albinism (OCA) [1]. While certain surgeries (like eye muscle surgery or cataract surgery) can help with specific eye problems, the primary cause of poor vision in albinism is a structural issue in the retina that happens before birth and cannot be surgically repaired [2]. Why Can’t Surgery Fix the Vision Loss?

- Refractive Correction and Sun Protection: Prescription glasses or contact lenses are crucial for correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism [14]. To manage light sensitivity safely, experts recommend polarized lenses, specialized tints, and wrap-around sunglasses that block light from all angles. Because eyes with OCA lack protective melanin, it is absolutely critical that all lenses offer 100% UV protection to prevent permanent UV-induced damage.
- Nystagmus Management: Nystagmus (involuntary, rapid eye shaking) is common in OCA. Sometimes eye muscle surgery can reduce this shaking or improve a persistent, uncomfortable head tilt [15]. While this will not provide 20/20 vision, correcting a severe head tilt can prevent long-term neck pain or spinal issues.
