Key Laboratory Markers
Beyond the IPI score, several other “biomarkers” help paint a picture of your prognosis:
- Beta-2 Microglobulin (B2-M): This is a protein found on the surface of many cells. Elevated levels of B2-M in the blood are often associated with a more active disease course in marginal zone lymphomas [4].
- Ki-67 Index: As discussed in your diagnosis, this “speedometer” measures how fast cells are dividing. A higher Ki-67 (especially above 20%) can suggest a more aggressive clinical path [5][4].
How NMZL Compares to Other MZLs
It is important to be aware that NMZL is considered slightly less predictable than its “cousin,” MALT lymphoma [3]. For example, the 10-year overall survival rate for NMZL is approximately 56%, whereas for MALT lymphoma, it is closer to 78% [6].
Please note: Because NMZL typically affects older adults (with a median diagnosis age in the 60s), this survival statistic includes people who pass away from unrelated causes or old age. It is not a direct measure of your risk of dying from the lymphoma.
While these statistics can seem daunting, remember that they are based on large groups of people over long periods. They do not account for the newest targeted therapies, such as BTK inhibitors, which have significantly improved the ability to manage the disease if it returns [7].
